"Stat overflow"

Make stats that are overcapped on a player buffer against received debuffs to that stat.
For calculation purposes treat those overcap points as derived from buffs, and only factor in after all regular buffs have been canceled out

Example: player has 79/75 Dex in his template, the debuff must eat through the 4 extra Dex before the item bonus starts being lowered

STR DEX QUI CON
Matter Heat Cold
Body Energy Spirit

-could be invested into to insulate from debuffs here and there or all towards one

No
Though soft and hard caps from progression work that way

That would be a huuuge buff to some classes compared to others.... Some of the melee classes have templates that are easier to cap than others, they would be stockpiling 100 extra con to negate the con debuffs or such. while other classes, typically hybrids that has more stuff to cap will never get the chance to do the same.

Also casters are so easy to cap that most will be able to find the extra dex to overcap making dex/qui debuffs completely useless.

Sorry but its a bad idea.

It is not possible to nullify a debuff with the suggested calc: Regular buffs are deducted prior to "overflow" stats, followed by item bonus. Unless you're running around unbuffed what you said won't occur and in that case you still end up with less of the stat than what you would have with buffs up.
The exception to this is with resists where you're more often than not only running 26 from items and no buffs

Edit: with the resists in mind I guess they would only prevent the value from dropping below 0 (going negative)

No matter how you make it it will force EVERYONE to redo templates for no good reason at all.
