I’ve played Phoenix since launch (with a few breaks here and there) and I can honestly say this is the best DAoC experience I’ve ever had. I’ve played various DAoC servers since 2004, live and freeshard, & now I am at the age of 32 the QoL features on Phoenix make DAoC playable again and I think the Dev’s have done an amazing job of the server.
However ...........
The new archery change is in my opinion damaging to the health of the server.
One thing I really liked about this server was the PA dmg was lower and archery damage was lower. As a result those who REALLY wanted to play stealther classes still did, and a healthy stealther population still remained.
Myself and an irl friend like to log on, duo and jump into rvr. At the moment we’re running an SM RM duo, nothing too flashy. Previously we could spend hours at a time running as a duo, but lately we might do 4-5 runs and call it a day. This is simply because everywhere we go, there is an abundance of archers. No matter where we go. When ever we decide to engage visible targets it results in the same thing over and over
- archer hits you for 900+ dmg,
- another archer hits you 500 dmg
- another archer hits you 500 dmg
Dead.
It literally makes duo’ing impossible. Today we tried Beno, DC, FZ, Crauchen Gorge, nGed, avoided task and still it was the same thing;
As soon as we engage target(s) straight away archers pop from everywhere.
Archers are currently the highest dps in game by far. We tested my RM rc spec bolt 317delve on energy debuffed targets from the SM, and still even that didn’t get anywhere near the 900dmg that crit shots are doing.
Archer standard shots are doing 400-500, considering SM spec LT nuke does around 330 on a target with 26% cold, the muliplier just seems all wrong for archery.
I can’t help but feel the archery change is breeding a lame style of play. It’s as if everyone has gone 50bow max falcons eye. /server info is showing massive numbers of rangers, scouts & hunters respectively. Let’s not forget these classes don’t bring anything to the table in terms of community. These classes should be at the lower end of that report. Ideally we want to be seeing high numbers of support classes, speed classes and healing classes, these are the building blocks of a healthy rvr population - not archers.
I logged off today not out of frustration or rage, but I was left feeling disheartened.
I can deal with being run down by an 8man, or zerged down, that’s part of the game, always has been - if you’re competing in an rvr zone you can expect to be outnumbered, but outnumbered by stealthed realm enemies that are doing the highest single target dps in game at long range ?
I vote the archery change is reverted, and we ditch this idea of pure sniper spec archers.
