try standing behind the defensive structure, not in front of it if you want protection...

if it makes you feel better, anyone who killed you there, died for it. (exceptions might be archers from a very high position)

The guards already hit incredibly hard and are really fast if you come too close to them, to kill anyone that isn't a onehit with instant-DD probly multiple people suicided into the keep and one managed to take your life as collateral
