Items lost during critical spellcraft fail ?

Just exploded two times and hereby lost 2 99% chain items worth about 1,5 P total, which is a lot of money to me right now. My understanding was, that we only lose the gems, but not the items. Am I wrong ? Working as intended ?

Pretty sure you lose the items. At least you didn't lose your life.

you only explode if u are below 1000 afaik.
