Installation Difficulties: .exe to backup.exe

I managed to download the client without any difficulties but when I try to open the phoenix.exe file, the the phoenixpatcher.exe file renames itself to phoenixpatcher.backup.exe

I should state that I have a macbook and am using Winebottler.

From what I can find, most people say this kind of problem occurs due to an antivirus but as far as I'm aware, I don't have one. Any insight would be appreciated!

The launcher downloads updated files, including itself / the 3 .exe files, when it downloads the .exe files it renames the current ones .backup.exe as a fail safe in case the update goes wrong or, like in this case, something is removing the file.
Please really check to make sure nothing like some antivirus tool or anything else removes them, files don't just magically disappear. However, I don't know if anyone tested it in a setup like yours and it's possible that it's not compatible. It works on wine however.

I haven't installed an antivirus on the computer as, from what I understand, it comes preinstalled on Macbooks. I've disabled the firewalls, adjusted permissions and played around with the gatekeeper settings with no luck yet. While I'm sure something is causing it, I don't know what it is or how to fix it... Any other suggestions?

I've the same issues on a brand new system. Make sure you have the game files listed in your AV exempt.
