So I want to try all 3 realms, but I don't want to delete all toons and start over. I also don't want to break any crossrealming rules, so how does one switch realms legally? I searched the wiki and all the documentation I could find, and no joy. My google-fu was weak on this as well. Thanks

Don'g log in for 12 hours. After 12 hours you should get the realm selection screen.

You can create characters on any realm without tripping the timer, but if you log into a realm, you are locked to that realm for 12 hours. After that, you are prompted with the realm select screen again upon login.

To clarify, creating a character will start the 12 hour timer as well as logging in.

I just got owned by this, all I wanted was to reserve the names and never logged the charcters in.

I hadn't really thought of 12 hours as being excessive, until I'm not sat here living it. 6 or 8 hours (around a workday) would have the same effect of preventing tactcial cross realming, but allowing people to enjoy and play a full variety of realms & classes.

I can only imagine getting on Saturday morning to play. You name reserve on other realms and BAM... can't play your main for 12 hours

I think if you delete all characters on the realm that you just created them on, then you can log into a different realm. But i haven't tested it.

Totally agree. This was made to avoid people to log when there is a relic attack on their favorite realm. 6 hours would be great.

what does 'logging in' mean? char selection screen already counted as logging in?

thanks

Creating a new character or logging in resets the timer.

"logging in" would mean actually signing into a character on one of the realms. This start the timer over again to 12H (Also making a character on a realm will restart the 12H timer I've heard)

I wanted to chime in that I also think 12 hours is too much. It is just long enough to keep me from even wanting to try the other realms. Considering we are all on just one server, and can't have access to other realms on a different server, the timer should really be more like 4-6 hours. Long enough that no cross realming shenanigans can take place, and short enough that I can play one realm before having to leave the house, and play another when getting back without feeling like I'm completely locked out of the idea of switching for a bit.

It's just a big commitment to say " hmmm maybe I'll try a bonedancer for a bit instead of my hib/alb toon...but then realize you hate it but can't go back to your main for basically a day.

If you don't work an 8 hour job, I could see this point of view. Otherwise, between work and sleep, this is a perfect amount of time for realm swapping. If I may make a suggestion, pick an evening for a different realm, make a list of classes you are interested in playing, and go through that list; this give you an opportunity to determine what you enjoy or don't enjoy. If you're too stressed about losing time/progress on your other realms, maybe consider the reason for playing this? In the end, it's a game and you should be having fun in some fashion. If you're stressing yourself out and can't avoid that, it may not be worth the hardship you're placing on yourself.

Yes, the timer could be lower, but it's not negatively impacting game play in a way that can be planned around.

8 hour work day and sleep does not always mean the 12 hour timer is perfect.

A lot of people work midshifts so they can play in the morning and at night before bed.

Personally I don't see why 6 hours isn't more then enough of a swap timer but 12 hour is fine with me.

I agree there are some fallacies in the 12h timer and that it does negatively impact some people making it more difficult to plan around (Or inconvenient). I'm all for the timer being lowered if it won't impact cross-realm in anyway but help out those it affects.
