Discussion about names

Well judging by the discord a lot of players had their names taken and reserved. It appears that not only were "desired" and easy to remember names gone very fast, but also quite odd and unique names of "famous" long time DAoC players. Ive even read some stuff about name selling and people offering real world money to "get their names" back.

Thats a bad and highly undesireable situation, espacially considering how much is attached to ones unique ingame name, some even lost the ingame name fitting to their account name, which probably really sucks.

Now I do hope we get a solution for the people affected and maybe can have the staff intervene on a case to case basis.

E.g. its probably hard to change anything, if the name in question is "Cat" or "Dog" and the person asking has no track record in the DAoC community, but help would probably be prudent, if the name were like "Ghavatrixl", the account name matched and the person played the same name for years on other shards.

P.S. Shame on those who purposefully reserved the names of other players just to grief them. Bad start to an amazing server.

P.P.S. No I am not in any way affected personally, I just thought the behaviour sucked balls and wanted to voice my opinion on it.

it always sucks when thisa happens, but i wouldn't really assume malice in most cases (although a few surely did that just to spite someone)
Famous names are copied all the time.

Since LOTR went so big you see hundreds legolas legolaas and allthelikes in games, and i bet there will be a Tungdil on Midgard side on Phoenix, because there ALWAYS is.

And the same applies to huge playernames

There's not much that can be done, i believe going through case by case is a too big of a thing to ask of the DEVs, and just because one person was known on one server doesn't mean there weren't other playing with that name on other servers. Why should the one that kept screenshots of an old character have more rights to the name than anyone else? Evaluating that fairly is nigh impossible, and the devs surely have bigger issues atm (and if they don't....let them play their fucking game, they worked hard for it, they deserve playtime more than any of us )

I reserved every perturbation of Legolas in case someone is interested.

I was a little disappointed when the "stress test" weekend was announced and discovered that names could be reserved ahead of launch. I was doubly disappointed that the weekend was set to start in the middle of the work day US time. Why not just do it on Saturday morning US time? Far fewer people will be unable to log on for 15-30 minutes midday on a Saturday than on a Friday.

I then thought about the caliber of some of the people I have interacted with on these forums over the past six or so months and was pretty certain that if I didn't have a way to secure "Magesty" in the middle of my work day there was a chance it would be taken purely out of spite by some mouth-breather brimming with nerd rage that didn't like what I had to say about something like XP items.

Now, I understand why the devs chose to allow people to reserve names during the stress test. If they didn't provide a real incentive (no one really gives a shit about logging a char in a certain place) almost no one would log on, and certainly there wouldn't be a huge quantity of people all trying to access the server at the same time like we will see on launch day next weekend. Still, it just feels clumsy. Names are hugely important to people in MMORPGs, especially one as long standing as DAoC, and the way this whole weekend was set up was just screaming for griefers to have a field day taking names from people they have grown to dislike for whatever reason over the past two decades. It also put undue pressure on people in non-EU timezones to figure out some way to create their characters in the middle of the work day to avoid losing out on their name.

I don't really have a good alternative solution to offer up as I don't know the exact goals of the devs in regards to this stress test, but I think a better course of action could have been implemented. I'm truly sorry for those with unique names that couldn't log in at 11 AM on a Friday and got griefed.

According to discord the staff is already on it.

Most people have done it to grief their friends tho, I'm sure there is some proper griefing happening but i know a few people that have appropriated names for banter. How are devs policing this cos I have 2 friends that have taken names I use but I don't care of they give them back in a timely fashion or really at all as I just stick x and zs at the end til o get a name lol

lol

so now everyone is supposed to know the names of every "famous" player in daoc history and isn't allowed to use those names, unless they want to be hit by "measurements"?

guess what, daoc has been played on different contintents, on different servers; people played different games with names they may want to use now. So if I played as [famous name] BDO for several years, i'm not allowed to use that name because there was that "famous" guy only his guild knows about playing on uthgard in 2008?

lol srs.

Guess it depends on the name, I can't complain about mine as it's stolen from a popular show from our youth. But if your name was something like friedcheesyshrimp it's hard to believe that someone else also used that name YAGETME

I thought bigga was banned long time ago just like on Uthgard. Its the same people on every shard.
