I haven’t played in 10 plus years and not sure how much has changed figured this would be a good place to start. My question is what would be a more viable melee class for groups as well as solo in pvp and pve, options I’m looking at is mercenary as that’s what I used to play or reaver any help would be appreciated.

Hi Ahayes and welcome to Phoenix!

You are in the right place to ask questions. The Phoenix discord is also a good place to post questions that you have and you might get a more timely response. Unfortunately, I don't know much about melee classes but If you need any help once you get in-game, hit me or any Hospitaller up and we'll do whatever we can to assist you.

edit: You can use the /advice channel to ask questions and get help in-game.

My opinion:
Solo pve Paladin > Reaver > Arms > Merc
Solo pvp Reaver > Paladin > Merc > Arms
Group pve Paladin > the rest depend on the situation

Group pvp... this is where things change up. Some of this servers customizations include Paladin and hybrid love (see http://playphoenix.wiki/) Paladins were moved to a higher damage table, have a larger endo chant radius, and like Reavers, they can get access to Determination (up to 55%, but they can't get Stoicism like real tanks). So this makes Reavers for DPS and Paladins for peels/endo much more welcome in groups than they would normally be in 1.65. Mercs will always be best average DPS (Reaver can certainly contest if they can spam the Leviathian back style). So I they are all good options depending on the group setup. I could be wrong, but for group PvP I would say choose something you want to play.

It also depends on what style of play that you like. Do you prefer all defense, all offense, a mix of both? Do you like to hybrid it up with some spells etc?

Don't Forget the friar. Was also moved up the dmg tables, has base and self buffs, resists and heals. Not being able to spec dodger any more is a bit sadening but he can also go for Determination.
Beats all others above in solo pve. Solo pvp a friar would have a hard time beating a reaver but should still do well. Group pve - well better a friar than a 2nd Paladin, other than that he brings basebuffs, heals, dmg and resists to the table. With the exception of the resists there's always another class more specialized and thereby better at that.

Infiltrators, scouts and minstrels should also count so keep those in mind aswell.

I m currently playon a friar ,
and this class KICK ASS !!
I m doing around 300-340 dmg on stealther, and 250-280 on mid tank, only problem with archer or caster who nuke you from long distance
Friar is a damage dealer with heal and buff..Play it!!

Thanks for the advice, I’ve thought about infiltrator but that’s typically strictly solo and kind of want best of both worlds, being out of the game this long I want to focus on one class that’s well rounded. And I hear there’s already a ton of infiltrators 😂

Hi again!

We are in the final stages of beta and since i50 is in effect, you aren't out anything but a little time if you want to just roll a fresh level 50 and take it out for a test drive in Cathal Valley or Emain. If it doesn't appeal to you, roll something different. Now is definitely the time for experimentation.

and there are TONS of infils out there. I think the Friar sounds appealing
