Why a decent communication of dates is important

Lets get one thing out of the way, i really so far am a fan of the work of the staff here.
I totaly accept the need of changes to move the server towards launch. I am all for that.

But this wipe of Gear on a sunday after ONE DAY of ahead notice is a HUGE letdown.
Can you maybe see that i dont want to equip 5 chars and write stupid item lists in this forum on the only free day of my week?
If i had known earlier, i sure as hell wouldnt have logged in today, but obviously the dates and plans of others dont matter here.

Can you please in the future announce such FUNDAMENTAL changes like COMPLETE ITEM WIPES one week ahead? Thanks.

P.S.: I sure as hell think this server isnt ready for i50. but thats my personal opinion.

Should phoenix staff plan their implementation of changes/testing based around your schedule or based on their own availability?... I'll go with the latter. Would you rather have npc's now and tested with multiple items added (and items wiped from accounts) throughout this weekend or on 20OCT? When they announced i50 for the 20th from my point of view it seemed a lot of people stopped playing to await the i50 phase.

i dont want them to plan things around anything. i want them to give ahead notice. read, understand, type. you should do it in this order. not in any other.

I really don't see any problem with the "soft wipe" you are geared again in like 2 min with nearly everything you need. Ofc it's nothing for the min-maxer but it's more than enough and everyone has the same gear (if you don't start to craft your own sc again) and if you miss any item so hard then just write something into the thread as you are doing number 2

figuring out the different weaponspeeds, checking the values of buff pots and charges, resetting quickbars, adjusting specs to the new available weapons, reskinning, reapplying padding and all that on 5 chars. 2 minutes in what universe.....

They informed about the soft reset when they released i50 info (telling us that there would be i50 merchants). 1-2 days before i50 merchants were released they released information about it. It took me top 5 minutes to change the reskin and recolor the armor.

It took me less then 10 seconds to add all the items and buffs on my qbars.

They have been super good at giving us information, so I have to disagree.

The other option would have been to announce an item wipe in a week. Sure that would have been given players more time to say good-bye to their items, but it wouldnt have changed anything in general. People that made a SC two or three days before the announcement still would be mad, no matter if a wipe happens after one day or after a week of the announcement.

The other big disadvantage would have been, that we wouldnt be able to continue working on getting the server ready for i50. Maybe many player only see their "personal" items gone, but for us it is a very important step closer to i50 and it was needed now or we would have lost more time on our way to i50/launch. If we wouldnt have done it now, we may would have to postpone the start of i50. Dont you think this would have made a lot more people mad?

I totally agree that a decent communication is important, but we had to take this step now or i50 would have been in trouble. Reading the advice channels yesterday was at some point really disappointing and some of you really should stop thinking that we only change things to make their life worse. We dont want to put a disadvantage on single players, classes, playstyles or realms. We only have one thing in our mind and that is the server.

Sure, we are not always doing it right (for most of us it is the first time "building" a server) and we are always open for discussions, suggestions and adjusting things. But we only do the things that we do for one reason: to create a server where many people have fun playing DAoC and to create a server that is as close as possible to the vision that we (the staff) all agreed on when starting this project.

A little bit more patience and understanding is all we asking for. Thank you in advance.

Well, yesterday i was so pissed, understanding was not an option. I had a full 5 day-60 hrs of work week plus family issues onnsaturday behind myself, and i had reserved the sunday as personal me time. Which didnt happen for the obvious reasons.

I equiped 2 chars, respecced them, rebuild bars, organized money to dye them and then i was just done, that the rvr grp i wanted to join, needed rhe 3rd class.

Today the world looks a little different. I realize that some ppls behavious (including mine) was a letdown for the work you guys put in. I am sorry it shaked out that way and it wasnt intended.

Nevertheless it all could have been avoided with announcement a bit prior to that. I realize that some things need to be done right now or other things dont happen. But that usually leads to complications as shown here. At least thats my experience.

I spent 4 plat and a few hours of mine and a friends time to do my Druids template Thursday night... So I was pissed yesterday. I thought we had until the 20th... 😔 A weeks notice would have been nice, but I'm over it. 😑

I'm considering having my alchemist make free lusters and hand out free dyes till my 40p is spend.

But is on Alb.

WHAM! I pound my meaty fist into my desk. WHAM! WHAM! WHAM!

The sudden exertion has left me breathless and sweating. I rub my now sore mouse hand while staring at my empty inventory. All that I had worked so hard for over the past few months had been callously ripped away from me by faceless overlords. My items? Gone. My carefully calculated dye scheme? Gone. I had plans for today. Big ones. After slogging through a week of long hours at my shitty job and coming home each night to my lazy, irritable wife, I had hoped to log on to each of my eight characters and play them for approximately fifty four minutes a piece. Unfortunately it looks like even that simple pleasure has been denied me by the thoughtlessness of others. This was going to be MY time and it has been TAKEN from me.

Fortunately I am of stalwart character. As the adrenaline and anger fade from my mind I feel my vision once again become focused and clear. I am an arrow speeding towards my target. Taking a deep breath I think to myself over and over again: "I am an arrow. I am an arrow". Now fully ready, I move my first first character to the i50 merchant. Upon clicking and seeing all the choices I almost fall out of my chair. I wasn't expecting to have to mull over so many options. I begin to falter. The familiar feeling of confusion begins to seep into the edges of my mind. My vision begins to glaze over as I try to comprehend each item's unique stats-- The first five pieces of armor have the same AF and quality, but what about the sixth? What if that one is different? Sighing, I push aside old wrappers and cups in search of something to write with. My hand, still sore, finds what I'm seeking: A capless red Bic (I find the red ink is easier to see than blue or black when using only computer monitors for light.)

An hour later I have managed to review each item individually. A pile of fast food napkins with stats and calculations scrawled upon them rest in a heap next to my left hand. I'm finally ready to equip my character. I click and drag each item to the proper slot. As I place each piece into its proper place I can feel my heart sinking into my stomach. The pieces aren't dyed! They aren't fucking dyed!

"ARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHH!" I yell, tears beginning to well. I slap my hands against my thighs (even in my white-hot rage I keenly remember the stinging pain from my outburst earlier) The injustice of it all makes me want to explode.

Between my gasps for breath I hear a thud in the other room. My wife has gotten up from the couch. My outburst must have been quite loud to get her to peel herself away from staring at reruns of 'The Great British Bake Off'. As her plodding steps approach the threshold of my computer room I try to regain composure, but I can't.

Light pours into my darkened room as she opens the door, "Why are you yelling?" she asks me, her tone draped with accusation. Even seeing her shadow on the wall in front of me fills me with revulsion. What has happened to the woman I used to love? Days spent on the couch have rendered her form unrecognizable. Subtle features and curves I once cherished have become blown out and bloated. I have grown to hate her almost as much as I hate myself.

Averting my eyes from the wall, but not turning around I growl: "Shut the fucking door and go back to watching your show. You have no idea what I'm dealing with right now."

As my eyes adjust back to illumination provided by my computer screen I move my character to the dye merchants. Reaching down, I dig around in one of the greasy discarded paper bags next to me for more napkins to write on. I open they dye merchant menu and begin to scrawl the name and price of each and every dye so I can adequately tabulate exactly which ones I need and their associated costs. My arms begin to tremble as I think about how much of My Day I'm losing to this travesty. The dye process will take me another thirty minutes on this one character alone.

I had hoped to find solace from the misery of the impending work week, from the misery of the 160 hours I spent this week not playing computer games, but even that has been denied me. As I'm writing the cost of charcoal dye my pen tears the napkin and renders all the prices I had written to this point unreadable.

Overcome by angst and adrenaline, I alt-tab, open the forums, and begin to type.

good thing i only had a bad week, and the next one allready is a lot better, while you still will be the same caracter that degrades and ridicules others.

at least i had the decency to apolgize where i went wrong. do you?

UTHRED and ALL Phoenix staff, first let me say that i absolutely LOVE the server so far, so much so that i had 20 lvl 50's already working on my 21st(Cabby) when the item wipe happened. Now i had 20 lvl 50's(7 hib(cicaln? toons), 7 Mid(Dim? toons), 6 Alb(Exp? toons)) already and lost a shitload of money when the personel merchants/vaults were deleted WITHOUT IN-GAME NOTICE(i dont read the forums, they get me in trouble, and i don't discord unless a group requires it)!

i was beyond upset, so much so that i said F*&^ it and deleted all my toons, why would i want to be like every other joe out there until live happened, NOT MY STYLE! Plus resetting up 20 lvl 50's with new gear, qbars and stuff is NOT a quick process just to have it wiped again when live happens.

I didn't need a break From DAoC(been playing non stop for over 16 years) Uthgard was crap because of the BS GM's, so i went and played Live, and well that sucked BAD, horrible DAoC Server Live is, just f*&^ing Garbage!

Some people did NOT need i50 garbage to play, it SHOULD have been an option, not manditory!

Again, i love the work that you all are doing, just a mistake to completely item delete without IN-GAME notice!

He's not wrong, there's not some NDA or something just should've said "hey wipe is coming ya'll don't be like taking SC orders and spending hours on stuff that we are deleting in a few days", then this all would've been avoided. Would've taken like 30 seconds to save several people several of wasted hours. Not about patience or understanding just let the people that play here get a heads up. If you do it shows great communication and respect for your players and if you don't you get posts like this because you wasted people's time because 30 seconds to post an announcement was just too much to ask to save them hours and hours of wasted time. Seriously, it is indefensible to know this for a week and wipe it and give one day's notice, especially then to ask for "understanding". "I can make a post in 30 seconds saying wipe is coming in 7 days."

I do this on a xbox server I host where wipes are necessary and I can tell you I wouldn't come back to the players there complaining about me not giving them more of a heads up to ask them to be patient with me. If a mistake was made say "sorry, our bad, we meant to and it slipped through and nobody made the post." It's quite another to double down on it and you are not removing the fact that people wasted time on your server and you wiped their stuff and you could've saved them that and chose not to, and nothing above justifies it. I mean really "say goodbye to their items?" Where is anyone saying that, its about wasted time, don't straw man it just say sorry our bad and we can all move on, the doubling down is worrisome in something so clear cut. There's no good reason above anywhere to not give 7 days heads up instead of 1, only bad reasons posts like this will crop up from. I love this server and the people running it but I think criticism like this needs to be here to make sure everyone's on the same page and expectations are universal for stuff like this.
Tue 9 Oct 2018 7:34 PM by gruenesschaf
As it was said, we could have announced that in a week from now there will be an item wipe but until then we wouldn't really have been able to do the things that required an item wipe nor could we necessarily have added items nearly as quickly to the merchant as until that wipe nobody would really be forced to use it right away to report the missing items. Due to other commitments we couldn't really have announced a week ago that an item wipe will happen the next weekend, that weekend we had the people there to quickly process the requests and with the item wipe we could do things that were planned some time ago but were impossible without a wipe and wiping with fewer staff people would have led to more issues.

What we could and probably should have done is announce that an item wipe will be some time before i50 together with the i50 announcement.

Keeping the existing items was never an option since a wipe was simply required and not wanting to run around like everyone else gear wise is not the point of the i50, the i50 will be with the best available gear for everyone. If something better is available report it so it can be added to the merchant.

I usually give the benefit of the doubt to the staff about really everything, there's things you are privy to I never will be. I could be very wrong, but I still don't see even after re reading both of the last staff posts how making an announcement post that next week sometime there will be a wipe would conflict with anything at all. The only remaining possibilities I can think of that post doing is some behavioral thing like we still need people crafting and SC'ing and farming for things to test a brand new change ; absent that it just seems like telling people about something like this is, I mean...it's pretty basic courtesy to me. I really do not want to be criticizing the staff but I'm not some fanboi who is going to walk around like things couldn't be better when people are bringing up things that have no bearing on the issue raised like it's a free server and other non-arguments, this is just about communication and the OP is not wrong, and anyone on any game who has things wiped and wasted a bunch of time is obviously going to have the same reaction, anywhere, in any game, with the same scenario, but people here are acting like it isn't a normal response. It's the default response.

^ This.

Maybe they were concerned that people would complain about the wipe? And those complaints would take up valuable dev time? It's beta, people know it's beta, and people still got upset over the item wipe, so.. ...
Tue 9 Oct 2018 10:09 PM by gruenesschaf
I don't think anyone of us takes this the wrong way and nobody expected that everyone would just accept it without complaint. But I also don't really think there would have been a much different response even if we had announced it a couple days earlier. At the same time our pov is we removed all items and gave the best possible replacement, we didn't just take stuff away.
Tue 9 Oct 2018 11:25 PM by Kohi
I read several comments about this, both in this post as in /advice or guild chat, and as myself, a few people somehow managed to 'miss' the wipe day, and consequently lost a lot of things. Tbh, i even crafted the day before dot procs and weapons which i stored in the vault ^^.
It's not only about SCs (i lost 3 temps with wipe), but also about stashed items and craft materials, stored crafted items, TG expensive stuff etc.
I must say it's still a mystery for me why ALL items needed to be wiped, included crafted ones, material (leather, bars, cloth, wood...) etc. Some guy said to me it was all about problems with reskins not matching classes ? idk...
However, like already said many times, it's a beta and stuff like this 'might' happen, i was not happy having lost so much and would have sell everything stashed in vault the day before and save me the crafting IF i would have remember the wipe; i forgot it despite having a vague memory reading it somewhere -maybe in the news window ig ?- and i think the solution to avoid this, would have been maybe to make those broadcasts we always had at the beginning of beta, in game, every let's say, 4 hours within the 24h prior to the wipe ? I read a lot that some people don't read the forums, so broadcast in regular intervals would have avoid the drama. Just an idea.
Anyway, it's done now, and even if some of us lost money and stuff (had to farm all day long yesterday in order to fill up a bit cash and be able to buy black for all new armor parts lol), like Gruenesschaf said, they didn't let us without replacement for the lost equiped gear and they add asap missing stuff on request to the merchant, which is very nice. I made my peace with this situation, fault was on my side anyway, as i surely read/heard about the wipe before, but somehow forgot or thought it would only concern rogs. The new stuff is nice to test chars with max potential in terms of stats, skills and resists, and i think that Phoenix team still do an excellent job while moving forward to the next step (don't forget they have tons of pressure not only fixing stuff, but also keeping up with schedule with lots of people pushing for release all the time).
All this said, i think that in the future, the staff will take measures to avoid such a situation again, so simply let's move on and be happy being geared for free and a step further towards release. ;-) Have fun !

I hate to break it to you, but for me at least it would have made a huge difference.

It is way easier to adjust to a unpleasant event, when you have time to do so.

And again. Its not about lost items. Its about wasted time.

I realize you need a item baseline to filter out gear effects from balancing issues. Just in this case there exist conflicting interests that have to be adressed.

But its ok now, its been done. I will take a break from daoc and see whats happening.
