Are Ments useful in RvR ? - Phoenix Freeshard

I just finished leveling a Mana Eld from 40 to 50. I had a ball doing so, mostly as a PBAE bomber. Further, she is devastating in RvR, being the only class in the game to have *both* NS and Disease (incl. AoE on the latter). Her DD/snare is very nice as well.

I am now trying Ment. So far I love her. She has PoM, HoTs, and can heal. She has 2 DoTs plus an AoE DoT. I can solo ojs (though, as always, yellows are way easier and more efficient). Groups love me. I can have a pet if I want, or heal bigger and have a (fairly short) mezz.

When I got to thinking about playing this toon in RvR, I began to wonder how valuable the class would be. PoM is of less value, since so many peeps have pots. I have no clue how helpful her HoTs and heals would be, and her mezz is single and of short duration. I would think her DoTs, esp. the AoE one, would be wicked for keep defense, but not sure they would be that great for "open field" RvR. The only thing I came up with that might be of great value would be the mezz heal (is there any other Hib class that can heal mezz?)....

Appreciate any input I could get on this. I am trying to decide on my end-game RvR class for release. Got it down to Eld, Druid, and Ment....

Spec Light and you are good to go.

Ceen suggested going Light mentalist spec which is the most viable in RvR. But it doesn't quite have the utility that the mana mentalist has. You are right that in keep defenses, the mana spec will have a role as the aoe dots are fun and can wreck the enemy. However, they can also ruin the fight for you if you break all sorts of carefully-executed CC. In PvE and raid content, the mana mentalist will still be very valuable but your question is about "open-field" RvR-viability.

In short, the mana ment is not a very good RvR class. (both the ment and bard can cure/heal mezz)

I hit 50 on my Ment yesterday and respeced to 46 Light/28 Mentalism as suggested here and also in the /adv channel (and by my guildies). I understand that a RvR Ment *must* have the 28 Mentalism for the mezz cure. However, I have not loved the switch from Mana to Light so far. I understand about the danger of any AoE in RvR, and would be careful with it. I *sorely* miss my HoT, and would think it would be of great value in RvR. I am not all that impressed with the Light DD, either....

The one thing that is cool about Light is the ability to charm a pet above my level. The biggest thing (size AND level) that I have charmed so far was a level 52 giant in the FZ - I was amazed that it didn't kill me. Although I have not had a chance to test it yet, one of my guildies told me (he was serious, I assure you) that if I get mezzed, I can release the pet and it will break my mezz. If - a big if - that is true, then Light spec gives me a second free purge. Have not had the chance to test this yet. If it is not true, then I will probably go back to Mana. Perhaps I will just relegate the Ment to raids, and use my Druid or Eld for Rvr. Plenty of time to make that decision imo...
