I just love trolls...perfect race for zerkers and tons of str and dmg.
Zerkers also have a special abilitiyt to go into Vendo mode which is basically a bear, and it increases their dmg output for like 20 seconds but is on a 10 or 15 minute timer.
They are beasts without beast mode, but add in vendo and they are awesome.
I have never fought a merc with my zerker 1 on 1 so not sure how they do head to head, but I will say if I am playing hib and I see a zerker I pray my healer is on top of it, but if I see a merc I am not nearly as worried.
But I have never played a merc personally so not sure what they are like, but I for sure have more troubles with zerkers in RvR then mercs.

Mercs are incredible, but you won't get many groups; Albs refuse to run anything but 5 casters or 4 casters and a peel.
Zerkers are also great, but again you won't find many groups until you have high RR; Mids are enamored with Savages and refuse to run Zerkers who haven't proven themselves. Most groups will take a RR3 Savage over a RR5 Zerker.

Mercs are very strong. Numb - Dirty Tricks - Slam in that order. Basically trying to get them to burn purge and cover the immunity with a fumble debuff.
I believe the only reason you don't see more of them is because alb has a lot of great classes that synergize better with sorc, like more sorcs.

Yeah, but the HO just looks like a brother and sister HO had a baby...
Trolls look they belong and look more intimidating (even if they aren't).
I have thought about a merc a few times but honestly the HO is what stops me =)
