I'd have to say ranger would be better, better rupts and can easily lock down three targets with rapid fire. They also have decent peel potential with cd+blade styles.

I've played a Visi Ranger for years in a Visi group and it's absolutely doable. However the player of a Stealther in a Visi group must unlearn a bunch of bad Stealther habits and learn to work in a team. Check the video link in my sig to see how I ran in a Visi smallman. When I have time I'll work on the 8man and keep assault/defense vids, and post those.

Hibernia is unique in that the Assassin class (NS) is almost as good as the Archer class to a Visi group, and in some ways, even better. The downside to any Assassin is that they have a lower armor tier, and do not have IP for those times when you are in an "oh shit" moment and your healer may not be able to heal you.

In general:

Archers - reinforced/studded, Rapid Fire, greater range than most spells. Excellent interrupters. IP and Volley available
Ranger - good positional peels, better chance of landing procs due to CD, good at assisting melee with their own melee (good bubble popper due to CD)
Hunter - good rear stun, probably the best interrupter due to Archery AND dog
Scout - the best group Archer IMO, due to speccable Shield - Guard for a group member (best to help a Caster) , BEST peeler due to Shield and the new OP'ed spammable snare.

Assassins - weaker armor (leather) AMAZING peelers due to poisons and styles, excellent melee assist due to disease and snare poisons. Can climb walls to set GTs for AOE and siege (which almost never happens, unfortunately)
Infil and SB - pretty much everything mentioned above
NS - good interrupter, especially with insta DD when closing in on the Main Assist's target, allowing the MA and tank train to close the distance without getting CC'ed

This.

A shar blades ranger in a visi spec would be amazing in this role. They get both IP and Det, and one guy I know playing a shar has his RAs up to push his health into raid tank territory so you have the potential to be super durable. You can't climb walls, but you can hang in the back line with the support characters for peeling while interrupting the enemy back line at the same time. Frankly I'm surprised there aren't more playing the class this way.

Just make sure to take 10 stealth for the safe fall, even if you don't plan on going sneaky sneaky.

At the server launch I played a thane in pretty much this exact role, chilled in front of the healers and rupted everything with my dds. Slammed and snared everything trying to push to them, It was pretty fun and actually effective being in a melee heavy group.

I've been playing this way for years. Just check out the videos in the sig. 10 minimum stealth is a must for that safefall

Thanks to pioneers like you it is borderline FOTM these days. Hit hard enough with melee and so. damn. many. hitpoints.

I dueled a couple with my keen hybrid and although my mainhand was hitting for similar numbers (I use broodmother MH as a pierce ranger) I lost ten times out of ten simply because I ran out of health way sooner.

1800 health and change on mine vs a 2600 health shar was a laughable match-up.

This seems like more a case of RAs being stacked for melee vs. archery/hybrid though. Shar will only have roughly 160 more hit points than a Luri due to con difference, and only half that much more than a Celt. It's obviously a great choice for melee ranger, or hybrid even, but you can succeed at the role with any race really.
