Anyone who watches Vikings (which resumed on November 28th) should consider The Last Kingdom. Same time period, but from the perspective of native Britons and the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. Based on Bernard Cornwell's book series, which is fantastic in its own right and worth a read. The main character is a complex one with mixed loyalties and aspects of an anti-hero, and there is a good mix of warfare, political intrigue, and adventure.
Another excellent series of historical fiction is Outlander, based on a book series by Diana Gabaldon. Nurse from the '40s finds herself back in 18th century Scotland during the Jacobite era, when highlander clans fought amongst themselves and the British redcoats. It's a grand adventure with strong chemistry/romance between the two leads, and some shockingly dark moments.
Awesome series, watched the first couple on the Beeb and now the last on Netflix. Is this the inspiration for our dyslexic GM? I am Uthred ... son of Uthred!
