This is funny I was just looking through my password manager and saw my phoenix login and for the hell of it went to the forum to see if maybe there was some recommended servers, new games or whatever and I come across that the phoenix server might be brought back?

I'm not sure if this would work to many people have moved on and have no idea that phoenix is still around. How would anyone even find out about this server? lots of in game friends have moved on and probably don't even communicate anymore.

How did people find out about uthgard, phoenix, not to mention the numerous other servers that have sprung up since phoenix started?
Rumour mill, friends, reddit, discord etc.
People are still playing daoc on freeshards and live, the community hasnt just vanished since phoenix closed.
There are over 10,000 members in the phoenix discord.

Too many shards for the limited population, all are running on less than 1k population, Eden has the biggest hope of bringing a population of 2k….a shard needs to make it a two realm game imho to just get a healthy population on each side

This server once represented the peak of well developed DAOC. Probably the most active, engaged community with constant rvr for all styles to be found across the frontiers. The community read and understood what they were getting into with QOL changes, initial and subsequently added features and the devs did a great job, until they didnt.

Somehow they felt the need to kill their own server as devs are wont to do, never understanding that this community would probably have played until the end of time with the original server settings plus some lateral advancement and new quirks here and there. However they decided to destroy the one aspect of this game everyone plays for, open, unmitigated, endless rvr. Which was available until it wasnt.

My friends and I still reminisce about the action on this server, able to recall hundreds of different engagements, 8v8, smallman, duo, ect you could play however you want almost all the time and that was truly an experience. Remember being up late eventually being able to reliably smash PK, fight zergs, camp MGs, multirole as a Warrior and just overall loving the experience. I dare to say the most of the community felt this way, despite some well played premades/guilds it was never dominated by one side, and there was always a healthy spirit of competition and realm pride.

In the end I quit my RR9L8 Warrior prior to the implementation of NF, seeing the writing on the wall would not commit to another doomed server where devs have gone rogue and esp when they began actively silencing people who accurately commented on the meaning of their decisions.

I will always look back on this place as one of the last times I actually had a great time gaming, and mad props to everyone who was part of it all, and thanks dev team too it was good while it lasted.

These servers will never last for more than a couple years. And Phoenix got lucky because covid shutdowns caused an influx that allowed them to continue longer than normal.

The fact that the game is no longer being updated with new DLC/expansions is what drives people away. To play it with any kind of regularity anyways. Running through the same rvr, over and over, is only fun for so long for the majority of players (some like you dont mind but most arent like that and most are what matters). So you make different characters to use and switch it up. But without new content, even that gets stale. If there's no longer new content to partake in, it gets boring eventually. Sure you may log in once a week or so to play a little RvR, but so are many others and likely less often than that. Eventually this dwindles to just a hard-core few. Look at uthgard. They did exactly as you want and they are essentially dead.

What the devs did was cater to the cries for more. Change this, change that, give us something new. All stemming from that need to have new stuff to do. Changing the rules and swapping things around work for a little, but then those who cried for that are now shaming the devs for changing the game too much to something unrecognizable.

I don't envy them. They can't make the right decision in the eyes of the majority. Because there isn't really one. Unless they could literally develop the game and add new expansions/content, they aren't going to satisfy that need an mmorpg exists for, the need to continue development.
