Best solo class for DF

Howdy!

I've been wondering which class you'd pick if all you wanted to do is solo, or occasionally duo, in DF?

Any realm.

Skald

Mind motivating why?

I feel like Skald would have issues with random aggro in DF. And getting past the 50+ mobs to get to Hib/Alb side will be difficult alone.

I played Skald back in the days, when the patch lvl was around 1.65...
I had no trouble getting past mobs, you just have to know which route to take, and which range the mobs will agro you..
The few cases where agro does come, you have your mezz or your snare, to apply and run away...
The simple fact that Skald is one of the best 1v1 classes, is the reason why I would take it..
Running with speed, is awesome, as where stealthers get more secure around, no one hides or out runs the Skald.
You can even take down larger teams, if you play the Skald correctly, and engange the enemy while they have agro (I know its cheap, but if ur solo, who cares)

You can even get End pets, charged items, heal pots, which will allow u to kill a red mob if agro...

Pick a stealther.
Skald is a bad solo class in DF, needs open field.

Could you expand on your stealther suggestion? Which one and why?

The best choice for a DF class will be one from the top two realms. A month or so into the server's life that will most likely mean Mid or Alb. In my experience with past "1.65" servers Hib is pretty weak. Hopefully this wont be the case, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Next you want to be able to move around the dungeon easily. This means you need stealth. Sure you can do a speed class like the Skald, and I'm sure it can be effective, but it wont be as efficient and safe as a stealther.

Thirdly you want to be able to kill targets quickly and keep them from being able to run too far throughout the course of combat. This eliminates Minstrel/Ranger/Scout. You are left with Shadowblade or Infiltrator. Personally I would select Infiltrator on this server as you can go Saracen with thrust and get Dragonfang.

All of this being said it also depends on what sort of combat you are looking for. The advice above is purely for killing 45+ players as a solo. If you want to kill anything and everything perhaps a Minstrel is the best choice as you can mez lower level groups and kill them one by one, and it will work better with a duo partner while still having stealth. The Skald isn't a terrible suggestion either, but I think that it is inherently limited in a dungeon setting without stealth. Archers might be viable as well, but I think given the current patch cycle and the ease at which enemies can disrupt LoS in DF they wont be able to compete.

If you want to "defend" in DF then play a cleric/druid/healer and add someone and go kill the stealthers who are plaguing the lowbies.

If you want offense then probably a stealther of some sort.

Also smite cleric/battle druid/etc, those get wins sometimes vs one one stealthers and are fun class.

For full rps while dead, if those go in, lots of classes can do well vs stealthers, some surprising ones like animist if you do it right.

I killed many a stealth toon on an animist back in the day. Of course it was usually mutual kill, as the fnf finished them off after they got me.

Awesome, i appreciate the detailed and well thought out response, thank you!

I'm going to be nitpicky here and say that Rangers/Nightshades do get stuns and snares in Pierce/CD as well.

My plan was to go Ranger, but i was curious to hear from more experienced people. I usually tend to focus my gameplay on DF, but i do enjoy taking keeps if i get the chance to do it. But this time around i have no one else to play with and i don't have time to commit to a guild, so i figured staying 100% in DF was the best choice for me.

Currently leveling a Ranger, planning on going low bow and higher Pierce/CD, but I'm going to experiment.

Clerics and Druids do sound interesting, but i fear they are easy to catch with their pants down as a stealther. I think for DF you need a class that can easily get out of a fight if it gets out of hand. Fire and forget gameplay will not be very rewarding.

Any of the assassin classes would be best. 2nd tier would be your minstrel/archer classes. Assassins have the burst to quickly kill someone and flee, while killing someone on a Minstrel can sometimes take a lot of time. Archers view can too easily be obstructed or shut down by engage, so they would most likely be relegated to killing lowbies or solo casters. Visible classes just won't really work. Margin for error is too low and the reward still won't be as high as an assassin since you'll be at the mercy of whatever is coming down the ramp.

I have to wonder if any of the people who replied here have actually PvPed in DF. I am by no means a veteran of DaoC but I have played it since release on and off, and I have a level 50 Ranger on this beta currently. I will share with you not my thoughts, but my actual first hand experiences.

Archers are 100% viable in DF. If your worried about someone running out of your range constantly you probably have bad positioning. Archer is all about being sneaky, getting the right position, killing a target or two and running away to reset so you can do it again. The Ranger speed spell is currently kind of bugged and does not work in combat and will drop if you get hit so using this currently is very tricky but after a few times you will start to understand how to use it without losing it. Hopefully they fix that.

Infil/SB/NS are also viable. These guys have to be a bit more choosy about who they attack and when because you wont have the range. However I have seen a SB/Infil stop a Hib group I was in from leveling because of the harassment. It just felt like when we were fighting a big pull they could kill which ever one of us they wanted and then run away. Its not hard to do if the group isnt synced or paying attention.

Minstrels seem to be the most common foe I see. With pet in tow these guys can pretty much run around the place with impunity. There are a few that I see down there on the regular just running around causing havoc. I have not seen to many Skalds, but I am sure they can dish out the same type of harass the minstrel can.

I'd say Minstrel is probably the best DF class aside from any Archer/Assassin. Ill also add that most people dont seem to realize that composite stealth does NOT give you mastery of stealth on this server. If you didnt know, MoS is tied to Stealth skill directly on Phoenix. It is not an RR ability anymore. You get it every 5 levels of stealth. Its common place for assassins to go 35 ish stealth because they use the 15 points they get from armor to make it 50. No big deal on other servers. On phoenix having 50 stealth as an archer lets me get real close to assassins that only have 35. At 35 bow, 50 stealth, 40 pathfinding, with the rest in Cs/piece for sidestun/backstab snare, I can walk around with impunity most of the time. In fact I have not been perfed once yet. I am sure that will change as people catch on and change builds tho.

Just understand that if you go stealther most of the builds you will find online wont mean shit because of how MOS works on this server. Decide which stealther you want to play, and then how much stealth you want and look at the builds you can make. This will probably make your decision for you when you see what your able to get and not get with all the different stealthers at 50 stealth. Its a give and take, and some classes have it better than others when it comes to this formula.

From my experience, assasins are fun in df. Btw charm works in df. You can charm necyomancers etc not sure about shredders and up. But since the change in detect hidden and true sight which i m not sure its for the best cause assasins should imho be better stealthers than archers....i would go with an archer. If you play it right, if a group has aggro you can kill 1-2 players in a group before they even notice you and then finish off any leftovers....we are sneaky bastards anyway! Of you position yourself correctly you have time most of the times to kill whoever who pick. On an assasin things are different, you have more landable stuns but everyone will notice you right away and focus on you no matter what their aggro is. I ve seen archers addimg in big fights and get most kills before anyone notices them. Thus i d pick an archer class!
