Hey folks,

Coming back to DAOC after not playing since retail launch ages ago. Had a lot of fun but I remember next to nothing about the game.

I'm looking for a class that isn't too complex to pick up and get into RVR with. Must be a Midgard class because I like Midgard's theme the most. I don't need them to be insanely powerful solo but the ability to solo farm would be appreciated, assuming I need plat to fund myself late game.

Last time I played was on a Thane because I liked having the opportunity for ranged nukes or melee engagements. Are Thanes reasonably useful / welcome in 8v8s here? I've heard a lot of the Phoenix PVP is big zergs and keep stuff, which probably means Thane is in a good spot.

Thanes are in a great spot but they're still not normally taken in groups, both rvr and pve. Whether that's years of bias built up over time or, more likely, they just don't fit in the mold of mid groups right now, idk.

For solo farming that you can also rvr with it's commonly suggested to create a BD or shaman. 38 Aug 37 cave shaman aoe dotting in modern or dark/supp BD chaining ojs for rogs/xp items. Warriors and Thanes can also do both with the same specs though it's slower and you normally go for higher level mobs, stuff like umbroods and hulks in DF. I will say BD is probably the simplest playstyle and is very strong with either 46 dark or 29+ supp specs. Your main job is rupting, which you can do with ease with two separate instas, one of which is a lifetap so you're very self sustaining.

Sad to hear about the Thane. The whole lightning aesthetic/theme is pretty sweet.

How concerned should I be about being 8v8 viable? What do the majority of the engagements in Phoenix look like? If they're big zergs or the odd roaming 1v1s I'd probably just go Thane and not worry about it. If 8v8 is the majority of play then I might have to look at other options.

Bonedancer could be neat. I like the idea of having a class that could farm up an alt once I get a better handle on what I want to do. Playing the interrupter role is basically selecting their Caster DD's and healer roles and slapping them with insta-casts during spells to cancel the cast, right? I did a bit of that on a Skald way back when.

Take the thought of 8v8 right out of your brain. The maps are too small, and the population is too large and concentrated into a single zone. Almost everytime you get a solid 8m fight a swarm of adders will descend upon you like a bunch of locusts.

The zerg mentality is very strong here and even if you don't want to join the zerg, often the zerg will join you.

That rant over, I'll say play what ever makes you happy, and if you're good at your role you'll find people to run with. Call down that thunder if that's your thing!

Don't worry about Thanes.. I get RvR groups all the time. Espcially caster grps - yes they are few in mid - love having thane wth them who can assistnuke and rupt if he doesnt need to peel. Some elite 8v8 grps might not invite you but there is no real 8v8 here anway due to the population in RvR zones.

If it's mostly big zergs my options are much more open I guess. That basically leaves me to pick what I want to be able to farm and solo with, right?

I don't have a lot of experience in zerg metas. Does this just add incentive to big nuke classes like wizard?

Noob friendly class would be Savage or Beserker.
If you want to randomly join mass pvp in the evening, thane or cave shamy would be your choice without depending on group.

Shaman or Bonedancer can do most anything successfully. I’d make one of those your first character, then roll a Thane or whatever you’d think most fun to play. That way you’d always have a good farm character, or another character to alternate with. Possibly you’ll enjoy the farm character so much you may not even make another character!

Welcome to Phoenix, and Midgard!

Id avoid the Shaman, pretty complex class, Bonedancer or savage if you want a class thats more wanted then a thane. TBH tho play what you want, its just a game and if your not having fun, whats the point.
