So im gonna guess that most people here are returning DAOC players; i myself never played it back when it launched as i was occupied in other mmos at the time. This was also before i decided Dwarves are the best thing ever or i would have jumped on DAOC back then. Looking forward to the upcoming unofficial sequel too.

I'll obviously be playing a Dwarf but having no experience with the game im wondering what i should pick. The first character in any new rpg is usually just a test anyways. I think i'll try Runemaster first but maybe end up Warrior or Thane for that 2h hammer goodness

Good news and bad news for you.

Good news is that dwarfs look great, they are small and harder to target. Their racial resistance is great.

Bad news is that they are sub-optimal for every class, due to their main stat being constitution (while all other stats are lower for every class than their competitor races), which has the worst effect of all stats: dwarfs constitution advantage is a mere +40 hitpoints at 50, where your total hitpoints are around 2200 buffed... it's less than 1 swing difference.

In other words you will deal less damage, cast slower, evade and block less, etc.. than other races for the same classes. If that doesn't bother you, then go for it. For me, this is the only game where I don't play dwarfs.

I'm used to dwarfs getting shafted and treated like a second-class-fantasy-citizens in favor of the prettier edgier classes, fine by me.
Any particular demand in Midgard, class wise?

Starting stat differences are so minimal (except for trolls) that it's not something you ever need to consider unless you're a top tier hardcore minmaxer and even then there will always be a rock to your scissor in this game.

Heard Skald was a good start so gonna go with that for now; the population is small enough that if Midgard needs a role i might change to that.

Welcome to daoc! I like your style. While the racial stats make a difference on paper, please know that they're practically irrelevant. Dwarf has a very distinct advantage; it can be anything. A tank or a healer, it's hard to spot from a distance. This is worth a lot; if people want to try hard, they make their entire group consist of only dwarves and kobolds.

Two class choices that your dwarf can't go wrong with: Warrior and Healer. Both strong core classes that are always in demand.
The support/healer role in this game is like no other, really demanding and intense. Healing classes are generally very powerful in this game and It's a lot of fun.
The Warrior is not just a defensive tank, he can dish out a lot of damage himself and bring CC to the table. You can protect your party members by covering them under your shield and be an melee opponent's worst nightmare.
The Thane is a slight variation of the Warrior, it's fundamentally weaker but brings other utility to the table. Some people prefer it.
Skalds are also always in demand, and a great solo class due to its mobility. It can feel a bit weak, your raw power will not compare to the above, but the tools you bring to the table are mandatory for PvP groups.
If you want to play a mage, a dwarf can also become a Runemaster. Very strong and popular class, but the difficulty curve of mage classes can be very rough if it's your first time. You will die a lot and very quickly, especially if you don't know what the other realm classes can do to you.

Is this one of those games where the Healer is purely support? Or can he play by himself just for leveling up?

aug healer can kill stuff solo...it's not even that slow (hearsay)...but it is really really boring, since you basically buff up, pull mob and autoattack until dead

That said, with unlimited respeccs before RR3 OR lvl50, it is good enough to whack stuff while searching for group or if you only have a short timewindow to play.
And when you find a group you can just respecc fast IF they need pacci

Soloing as Healer is the last resort. Shamans can do it very well, but dwarves can't be shamans.
The support of other realms have a better time soloing. In the north we are too social.

I had a dwarf rr9 warrior before TOA came out and he was a beast. I think a dwarf is fine for warrior, healer. I think for a skald, which would be great for you, it may be a bad choice since skald's strength isn't their primary stat.

Dwarfs make great skalds, warriors and healers.
