Given all the items I saw on the stress test I wonder what the importance of crafting will even be here. Like if I were to make a farmer with metalworking is it worth my time to do so, or can I expect to not need to craft and farm gear?

All ROGs of the same level salvage for the same price. So a cloth wearing caster that is farming ROGs doesnt have an disadvantage versus a plate wearing paladin when it comes to the 50% dropchance of a class-specific ROG. It is true, that one ROG doesnt salvage to very much material, but that is intended because every mob has the chance to drop ROGs and because of the high dropchance for a ROG. You have to salvage more often but you will get a nice amount of money out of it. Also keep in mind that salvaging an item only takes 1 sec, no matter what level the item is and no matter what your crafting skill is. That will save you a lot of time.
Another argument for salavaging is DF and seals. All seals salvage to the known, classic values. While farming seals, mobs in DF also drop ROGs. So you can double farm. Read this thread for more infos: https://forum.playphoenix.online/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=3045
Salvaging on Phoenix is a little different than on original classic, but im 100% sure it is also viable to make money. You dont have only a few spots per realm where "salvage-viable" items drop, but literally every spot can be used to farm. Another aspect is that some ROGs (mainly Jewelery) may be worth a lot when selling via the HZ.
