Sorc RvR Role

I know in groups Sorc is supposed to AOE mez, but beyond that, what is their role?

For solo?

For small/duo?

For 8v8?

For Zerg?

Trying to decide what class to play knowing I mainly want to RvR and want my main role to be damage - destroying other players - I don't want to be a full support basically and trying to figure out if that is what a Sorc mainly is.

If you are new to the game and want to shred 11111 people roll a cabalist, levels easier, its more simple to play and its the primary damage dealer so to speak.
You dont want to start with the main CC class.

If you want to be damage I guess you could consider speccing Body.

Not new - had a 50 scout and 45 minst back in the day. Does that change your mind on class suggestion? Solo RvR potential is important to me.

That said...I recall way back in the day sending my Cab pet after someone and watching it 1v1 someone while I hid in a keep...was pretty enjoyable lol...are the pets still that OP?

This is a very general question. How do you plan to play the game? Depending on the type of RvR you are going to engage in the suggestions will be different, and not all classes will be viable or have the same role across all forms of play.

For example, if you are small manning all of the casters are more or less viable and will be using their damage abilities quite frequently. I'd say Sorc is the best, but has the most "support" responsibility-- as in, you have to land mez and use your demezz. Wizards and Cabalists will need to be using near sight, resistance debuff and occasionally root. Cabalists are also responsible for disease. Theurgists will likely be stuck pet spamming in most situations, although an Air Theurgist could be a good option for you since you only need one or two pets on a target before you begin your spam.

In terms of solo play I'd say again that all of the casters are viable to some extent, but Sorc is probably the best. You really need a hard CC if you are going to solo and it doesn't get much better than the Sorc's mez. Now, if this server is anything like beta was there is going to be a ton of large-scale and zerg type action so it might be worth playing something that has AoE or bolts for maximum RP gain and satisfaction. In which case a Cabalist or Wizard would be an excellent choice.

Honestly, I don't think you can truly go wrong with any of the class choices when it comes down to it (assuming you aren't concerned about playing with meta-slaves). They all have pros and cons and will excel in different situations. Sorc definitely requires the most "skill" in that you have to react quickly and be aware of what is going on, but nothing in this game is really that hard to play.

Also- Cabalist pets are not strong enough to 1v1 here. Well, at least they weren't in beta.

Interesting comment on beta having zerg fights a lot and going with bolts.

I do LOVE using bolts, but don't they miss A TON in rvr?

And if you suggest bolts...wouldn't a RM be a better choice over Wizard? RM has speed, 2 bolts, cool looking AOE...I think Wiz is the same minus speed?

I don’t think you’ll find the miss rate too bad.

Runie would be another choice if you don’t want to do alb. You could also consider an Enchanter if you’re interested in hib. The reason I like the wizzy as a Zerg surfing type character is you get both bolts and an aoe dot. Speed is king though, you’re right about that.

I also want to be clear that soloing with a caster will be very difficult at times. You’ll have to learn to Zerg surf and leech a bit to rank up. There a number serious chokepoints in OF and as a solo caster you’re a deer running through wolves.

In PVE sorc is a POM Bot. Don't try to be anything else, you won't be good at it. When LFG just advertise what level of POM you have. i.e. POM # LFG. Level full mind for this reason, don't try to solo. It's not worth it even here.

In RVR the Sorc is arguably the best and busiest caster class there is. No other caster comes close in solo play, it has more utility then the bat belt, and with a cab debuff lays out some serious DPS. Your roll in small man and 8v8 is largely the same. You are primary CC but that's not your main role, your main roll is assist the cab on debuff and kill. It's sometimes difficult to split your time between dishing out CC and dishing out DPS and you'll have to make that in a moments notice. Likie split second timing. For example, healer calls out a tank on them it's your job to switch over to root and then immediately back to killing. I will tell you this, if you have a very best friend that plays this game, and you can read each other's thoughts, that is your cab. The teamwork between cab and sorc makes or breaks Albs in both small man and 8v8.

.In large scale RVR (zerg warfare) DPS takes a little more backseat to CC and debuffing for your wizards. Remember, when using amnesia, always use the green. Does the same as the red, cost way less.

Soloing as a sorc is FUN! You have all the tools you need to be successful. AOE Mez, AOE Root, Charmed Stun Pet (always get a stun pet), MOC-Lifetap etc. If you get the jump on an 8 man, you're going to die but you might take 1 or 2 with you before your assume the sorcerer position (face down in dirt). Finding those sub 50 xp groups is just a great way to de-stress after a bad day of work. Even if they are all in their 40s, it's not competition for a Sorc.

For spec, I ALWAYS go 40/36 Body/Mind at 50. Some will say 39/37, but that's relevant here. 39/37 is what all sorcs switched to from 40/36 when group POM was introduced at 37 mind spec. 40/36 gives you yellow POM/AoE Mez/AoE Root and sick damage from lifetaps.
