one main reason i play mmo's purely for summoner class pvp games , i want main necromancer but i read this threat https://forum.playphoenix.online/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=3167 , and was little bit worried , i don't want to be helpless alone and be purely support class , can i still be viable in pvp ?
Well it just depends. This is a whole big can of questions and answers.
If you never played daoc before did you play it during the beta?
You need to get the interface down and practice with that.
Beyond the being able to understand and play the game thing is your question about it being viable.
It is somewhat group friendly if you play a sight necro. Basically it is a caster. Spirit damage has a good resist table vs all, so overall spirit nukes are ok.
One Vs one it is a bit of rock/paper/scissors where necro can beat some classes and some players and lose to some classes and some players.
Small group its so so.
I played a necro in beta and found it depressing/amusing/and sometimes fun. Woodspryte from that thread you quoted is a subject matter expert for the class. Search his posts on here and read what he wrote and you will get some good info.
since you are your pet for all intents and purposes, and your pet is blue to a level 50 player, "you" will take significantly more magic damage. You shine again melee due to you abs buff, but are very susceptible to being stunned off evasion and won't be able to life drain to heal pet during that stun. You will be playing against all players who are able to fully utilize buff pots but you will not.
You can always start as support (draining power and giving it to the clerics/caster) as Deathsight, as you get realm points to you can switch to Painworking for DoT's.
But what Dominus stated is the reason.
But don't let it down you, if it's what you want to play, play it, there's always a way to play and enjoy RvR with your preferred class.
Therg is well liked, lots of short term pets. Also Animist is also quite the summoner class and well valued in PVE and keep defense, and a DD line that can make him useful in PVP. Bonedancer can do this too-- necro not so much. Tough to change people's minds about those three classes though. Theurgist, Cabalist, Enchanter, Spiritmaster are decent in PVP--- not quite summons but Sorcerer, Mentalist, and Minstrel can charm some really unique stuff and are valued in PVP as well.
Just don't do Hunter-- loneliest pet class in DAOC.
Necromancer is a fantastic class for PvE but is kinda lacking in PvP. IIRC the pet doesn't inherit resistances and will get blown up by other casters. It is a PvE powerhouse and you should totally play one in PvE because it's really fun,
Cabalist is a great class that does very well in PvE, is much more flexable than Necro, can do AoE DoT farming and also focus pulling. He has many different types of pets (Amber that tanks and stuns, Ruby that casts fireballs, Sapphire that can lifetap). He can also recycle his pets with the 3 spec points in spirit line which dramatically cuts downtime between pulls, Cabalist will do as well as Necro in PvE although it is more complicated than Necro as you need to kite a lot but is very rewarding. Cabby also does very well in PvP with debuffs, disease, nearsights and lifedrains.
Bonedancer is a fun class to play but is very much oriented as a solo class in PvP. He gets pets that heal him and also insta cast lifedrain on a short timer.
After there are the Theurgist and Animist classes that are pet classes, but their pets are short duration. Theurgist spams pets (5-10 typically) on his targets that are unkillable but only last a few seconds each. He has some great DD spells and run speed buff. Animist needs to set up a "basecamp" with his pets and waits for people to walk into rage of them. Personally not a fan of Animist because of this but people seem to like it.
Spiritmaster and Enchanter, are more regular casters that happen to have a pet. Both can do focus pulling but that style of gameplay does not work in PvP (Focus pulling is where you immobilize yourself to channel a huge damage shield on your pet that will be interrupted if you take any action. Obviously only viable in PvE)
Of all these, if you want a mix of PvP and PvE I would suggest the Cabalist because he can farm really well and does a good job in PvP. If you don't care so much about the PvE aspect, Theurgist is your bet. If you only want to solo mostly in PvP Bonedancer would be a good choice. Necromancer is truely a PvE powerhouse, you can chain pull orange/red mobs all day and all night without ever having to stop and sit down and med mana
necro is horrible in pvp and excels in pve, do not play a necro thinking its a pet class as its not, your best choice would be a cabalist or sorc.
I'll add the reason necro is terrible in pvp is the cast delay and issues regarding pvp combat that essential comes down to half second decisions that necros simply dont have, spell cancel and quick cast, line of site issues.
a regular caster will always out perform a necro, that is essentially artillery with no cast range. Just save yourself the trouble and play a pure caster if you intend to RvR.
additionally, cabalist will out perform necros with AoE dots and chain pulling single mobs is nothing compared to 10-20 aoe dotted mobs. So again, I'd recommend cabalist. With the pet reclaim spell a cabalist has with 3 in spirit, you will be able to reduce downtown aswell, gaining the cabalist the true pve champion spot, next to maybe mentalist as they have power regen and hibs frontier camps are legendary for clustered mobs.
