One of the things that always bothered me with DAOC's loot system was that stats were haphazardly distributed around item types, which meant that getting a single drop could lead to a cascade requiring an overhaul of your entire temp.
A "soft" limit of stat allocations to certain items (with points otherwise being equal across a template) I think would make templating much easier and more intuitive, and perhaps open up the field for messing with stat caps.
For example:
HP - BP, Jewel
Strength - Weapons, Bracers, Sleeves
Dexterity - Weapons, Gloves, Sleeves, Shields
Quickness - Gloves, Bracers
Acuity - Helmets, Necklaces
Constitution - BP, Belts
Melee Resists - Bracers
Magic Resists - Rings
Skills - Jewels, Rings, Necklaces
etc.
This way if you get a new item drop you can reasonably expect what stats you'll get from it, and you'll only have to replace maybe 1-2 items instead of shuffling your entire gear stack around.
