I agree that the original Relic System in DAOC was problematic. It allowed dominant realms to hoard relics and 20% damage bonuses. However, as many players have mentioned, the current system makes taking relics really unrewarding. You successfully raid a relic keep only to receive a 1% damage bonus every two days, and the relic is then left vulnerable in a normal keep. What's the point of putting together a relic raid, when it takes days to even notice the bonuses, and the enemy can recapture their lost relic so easily?
Relics should be held only in Relic Keeps. I would change it back to how it was before. Normal keeps wouldn't house enemy relics.
The charging bonus would scale down instead of up. This way you reduce powercreep of relic ownership. I would return the damage bonuses to 10%, because now they would scale down, so you wouldn't have the full 20% bonus pretty much ever. Even if you owned 2 Magic Relics you would have some bonus combination of 1-10% depending on how long you've held the relics. Recapturing a relic would reset the bonus to 10%. Once a relic drains from 10% to 0% it would reset and return to a home keep.
Let's say Hibernia owned the Midgard and Albion power relics. The Albion power relic would be at 3%. The recently captured Midgard relic would be at 8%. If Albion came to recapture their power relic, Hibernia would have reason to defend Dun Dagda since they would risk losing their 8% Midgard relic as well. Once the Albion power relic reached 0% it would return to the Albion relic keep.
Some of you will say well then what's the point of defending if the enemy relic is at a low damage %? Well I think its a good thing if underdog realms can recapture their relics and earn bonuses, even if it is short-lived. We want all realms to be taking part in relics and for the bonuses to be balanced appropriately. The relics changing hands frequently, even if for a short amount of time is better for the game. Everybody wants to see the 10% damage bonuses at some point.
