I'm wondering if there's any chance of getting the launcher to remember what region we choose to log in, so we don't have to select the region each time we launch the game.

Launcher region doesn't work. You still have to connect directly to the server with the client. There is no proxy involved.
The region probably only serves as a temporary proxy when authenticating your login.. once it switches to the game, it connects directly to the server on port 10300.

That would make the proxies quite useless.

Yeah wish I could drop the Falkenstein proxy with its 3-7 second (!) latency from the list/1st pick.
