I've played a chanter quite a bit in the past...just wanted to say the Phoenix Underhill companion does about 1/8th the damage as it did back in the day & Uth...but I only played chanter here to about 30...
I also found the pet to be quite erratic to control...they tend to go into melee just by being close to an enemy...I've seen the same from ice theurg pets...I had to juggle passive/defensive a few times after the pet going melee to get it to cast again...lots of 'target not visible' on hills too...then the pet just runs in.
Anyway...between a glitchy pet that 'nukes' for almost nothing, pbae needing LoS, and so many classes getting 22/55 det...chanters aren't exactly anything special here.
Enchanters tended to be overpowered during original classic daoc. With Det on so many classes and resis the baseline stun is 3 second instead of 9. The pet is bugged as hell, constantly lagging behind or being stuck somewhere causing a speed loss. I don't play an enchanter, but they do constantly complain about their pets.
