The Caravans system is pretty awesome. Caravans travel from portal keeps bringing upgrades to other keeps in the frontiers.
However, what if you could upgrade caravans to make them stronger.
You could require players to pay gold or claws to upgrade a caravan. Upgraded caravans that reach keeps would reward the players who upgraded them with feathers.
Spend 1 claw on a caravan upgrade. Receive a 100 feather reward if the caravan reaches the keep. It could be a fun gold sink that offers a chance at earning feathers.
The caravans would drop the gold that was used to fund their travel. So an enemy realm could essentially loot the gold used to upgrade the caravans, and then take those resources and fund their own caravans.
I find the Caravan system one of the most promising aspects of the server. Having the realms cooperate and pool their resources to fund Keep upgrades through the caravan system might make it even more interesting and promote realm pride. You would now be gold or claw farming to not just benefit yourself, but potentially your entire realm. You could track the top gold contributors on the Herald.
