What determines when you get a tick for defending a tower?

Today I (playing Albion) defended a few towers that were overrun by His. For one of them I still haven't received a "your efforts at Dun Crauchon Spire have not gone unnoticed" after about 3 hours. And DC spire has already been taken again by Albion. I just received one for Bledmeer Spire after just over 2 hours, long after it was no longer under attack. Yes, for the Nottmoor Watch Tower, I got a tick just minutes after a few people tried to suicide here and I killed them.

So...what exactly determine how long it takes to get credit for a tower defense? It seems absurd that it should be hours. And other times I get ticks for towers that I literally haven't been near in days. Is that system just completely broken, or is there some logic to it?

Update -- finally got my DC Spire tick, literally 4+ hours after I defended it and His took it. And it seems like there is a cap on feathers earned from tower fights in a day? Because for that tick I got 1040 RP (it was a helluva defense) but only 168 feathers.

I'd really love to know how that system works.

I got a tick a full 8 hours after a defense today, and the tower hadn't been in flames for the entirety of that time.

The feather cap is, for some odd reason, 1,790 a day.
