How does the Realm switching mechanic work at release?

This is probably general knowledge to the old beta players but i haven't been around when realmswitch was active and couldn't test it myself. (i know i can test it during the stresstest, but i am impatient and want information now ).

So, the realm switch timer will be 12 hours, but what exactly does that mean?

a) Does that simply mean, if i have been logged out of the game for 12hours or more, i can select any realm upon login?

b) Can i simply switch realm whenever i want but THEN i am locked to the realm and can't switch back for 12hours?

c) or do we have to initiate/trigger the realm switch somehow, and then it will be possible to switch after a 12hour waiting period? (if that is the case: is it possible to play the "old" realm while waiting for the timer to resolve?)

or is it something completely different?

Thanks in advance

Option a basically.

If you login to your account and played a still existing character in the last 12 hours you will see the char screen of that characters realm and unable to select another realm / fail to login characters of other realms.
If you haven't played in the last 12 hours / no character exists that has been played in the last 12 hours you'll see the realm selection screen on login (as it was / is always for the beta).

If i log out of Mid, then try to log in to Alb after what i think has been 12 hours, but it's actually only been 11h30min, and it brings me directly to the Mid character selection screen, does that reset my timer and i have to wait another 12 hours? Or does it only reset if i select a character and log in?

It only resets the timer, if you log in a char. As long as you are in the char selection the timer will continue.
