Devs intention for the ranger class?

I don't mean to open an old can of worms. I'm a relatively new player who mained rangers on live and am curious about what the perceived role is from an inhouse perspective.
The bow damage is certainly sub par even specced full archery/PF. The melee is of course with this spec, lacklustre.
Speccing reasonable melee means the bow is even weaker.
Pathfinding requires high investment for relatively little return when compared to the omni pot floor (ie everyone else has buffs too).
From what I read in the past this was done to counter archer zergs.

It feels like it drastically under-performs from my memory of it

Is the intention simply that people do not play the class at all?.

I really would prefer not to have to run stealth groups and have a viable solo class.

At present it seems like it is suitable for leeching RPs and maybe hitting solo casters.

Are there any intentions to address their current status?

I ask with no intention other than clarifying my class choice on the server.

Thank you for your response in advance.

They boosted them, then nerfed them back again (all archery, not just rangers). They still hit hard and can be handy in a siege against cloth but plenty of time to QC (anything) in open field to make the ranger just stand there interrupted or kite, restealth come again and hope you can get another couple of arrows in before QC comes up again (running/stealthing/getting back into range etc). I think higher RR rangers are supposed to be OK in melee, I think there are a few about.

Edit, as for intention, I am sure they will reply, but I can understand how they are difficult to fit into DAOC, and assisting archers were problematic but like the devs sometimes say, the DAOC community will always find a way to wring out overpowered/most efficient aspects of something that hadn't necessarily been considered before.
