Alpha/Beta/Launch and competition

Hello Team,

Yesterday, I was thinking with my brother on the timeline from the server and how the population would be impacted.

- Alpha seems to be quite successful given tracker posts.
- Beta is scheduled to start in June, this would likely bring more population and make testing / playing better.
- Then CU will launch open beta in July. Being the natural heir of daoc, most free shards should expect a drain. This drain might create a snowball effect on most server a.k.a. "nobody is playing, then I leave too". I don't wish for it, but I have seen it many times on other freeshards and it would be naive to think otherwise.

At this stage, as a future Phoenix player, I am asking myself the following questions :
- Given the current status of the build, why are we waiting to launch the beta and risk a conflict with CU beta? the game seems mostly viable.
- How long will the open beta last and how likely am I to invest myself? I know it is a tricky question, but some servers have open beta lasting a year which tells player that it is ok to lvl crafting, and start creating guild/community. However, a short beta of a couple of month would simply be a repeat of the alpha with simply more players to perform stress test on the server loads.
- Since CU is planned to release end of the year (yes the timeline is movable, but due to the significant cash influx, it is likely to materialize) the launch timing has to be at least a trimester before or after the launch. Before it will say to the player : ok for you to invest yourself but there will be a risk of population crumble; after it will tell to players it is ok to invest during the open beta and will have a safety buffer of 3 months after CU launch for the novelty to fade.

I am aware that there is a lot of speculation above, and that there is no crystal ball to tell how things will be. But I do think it is important to have a dialogue to exchange ideas.

Hed.

Any feedback on this?

Good post, Hedien. I think this is a concern of many people. We already have the potential competition of 3 shard servers which is too many in the DAOC universe. I don't think we need to be too concerned (YET) about Beta 1 starting for Camelot Unchained. The Beta has 3 stages and will last many months. Not everyone will get to play Beta 1 in CU, it will only become fully inclusive by Beta 3. And CU will likely release in the first half of 2019 at best.

The main concern for me is that we have too many DAOC free shards competing for player base. I am worried about the new shards releasing at similar times and splitting the already fragile population (especially in North America). And Uthgard still has a fairly stable population base -- though I'm sure many of them will jump ship to try out a new server.

If the shards open up in 2017, I think we will be ok with a few months of momentum before CU gets into to later Beta stages and closer to release. Yet all of this is something to consider and we do need to discuss timing server openings to help ensure a strong population.

We all know that fresh starts are the most fun and a server needs to capture and keep a lot of people right away.

Sorry for the late response, but it has been pretty busy the past week and we all have fulltime jobs "on the side"

Thanks a lot for your thoughts Hedien and trust us, we do think about all of this all the time.
But as you already said:

"I am aware that there is a lot of speculation above, and that there is no crystal ball to tell how things will be. But I do think it is important to have a dialogue to exchange ideas."

Our "non-communication" about these difficulties is not meant to be disrespectful - it is just, that we don't know either what will happen.

"Given the current status of the build, why are we waiting to launch the beta and risk a conflict with CU beta? the game seems most viable."

Before we let everyone on the server, we still have to get some things done, because once we have it open, critics will be there and if some features/mechanics are not working yet, we will get the worst reviews ever and many will not consider that we did open the Beta earlier than planned, including many bugs.
This is why we are trying to get the most important things done and have set our goal for mid-June. Everything else we can fix/implement/add during Beta.

We are very hopeful that the Beta will be finished long before CU final release.

I hope this makes sense!

I wouldnt even worry about CU, from what I have seen so far they will probably never get it right.

Just focus on a mostly bugfree quality release of Phoenix, even if it takes longer. You know the old saying "There is no second chance for a first impression"

I'm in favor of an earlier beta test personally, not just for bug-testing but also fine-tuning of the 1.65 modifications. I think a player consensus on exp, mana recharge rate, purge for hybrids etc. can only emerge once it's been thoroughly tested in pve and rvr. Slight changes are sometimes all that's needed to make a char feasible again rather than massive ones. This server has the right approach imo, but the devil lies in the details as always.

We are in alpha but anyone is pretty much welcome to join. So feel free to contact me in Discord if you want to participate. There has been a lot of good PvP tests happening lately.
